20/52 Weeks. I don’t like talking when it comes to what I feel. It’s always been a problem of mine. I’ve always been able to express myself visually… But ask me to talk about it, and I won’t know what to say. This is part of a semester long series I am starting for my night photography class. The idea is simple: self-portraits at night. For me, nighttime is when I can think and become immersed in my own thoughts. During the day, life is busy, hectic, and I often push aside my emotions in order to focus on other things. I hope that the photos I take for this series can somewhat reflect what I am unable to put into words. It’s more of a personal self-exploration, if anything. And most people who see the work will not know the personal connections I had when I created each image. Which is okay with me! Anyways I hope this night photography class and this series can push me both technically (exposures are harder in the dark!) and conceptually. Here is the quote that our professor introduced to us on the first day of class - which inspired me to start this little project: “…Darkness for the greater part of humankind, afforded a sanctuary from ordinary existence, the chance, as shadows lengthened, for men and women to express inner impulses and realize repressed desires both in their waking hours and in their dreams, however innocent or sinister in nature. A time, fundamentally, of liberation and renewal, night gave free rein to the good hearted as well as the wicked, forces both salutary and malignant in ordinary existence.” - A. Roger Ekrich
